LeBron James, not usually associated with the bench, will venture into a new furniture line that could sell benches and other furniture products. Darren Rovell of CNBC.com reports that Columbus-based American Signature — which operates under the brand name Value City Furniture in the Cleveland area — will go ahead with its plans this fall to begin selling children’s furniture items inspired by James. It is not known exactly how American Signature will market the collection, which is expected to include beds, desks and other children’s furniture.
The company filed for the trademark “Home Court by LeBron James” in October. According to the filing, the name would refer to items, including “furniture, mirrors, picture frames” as well as “wood, cork, reed, cane, wicker, horn, bone, ivory, whalebone, shell, amber” and plastics.
American Signature and James reached an agreement in February. Jonathan Schottenstein is the chief operating officer of American Signature. James and the Schottenstein family have developed a relationship in recent years. Ohio State’s men’s and women’s basketball teams and state high school basketball tournaments are played at the Value City Arena at The Jerome Schottenstein Center, which is named after Jonathan’s grandfather.
James’ children’s furniture line will involve his longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson, with whom he has two children.
