Often overlooked in the world of office productivity is the actual working environment itself.

There was a television commercial not too long ago that had a new employee being shown his workstation, which was a shared desk with two other employees crammed in elbow to elbow with zero personal space. The desk was clearly not big enough to reasonably accommodate this situation, and the employee just looked disgustedly at the Human Resources person giving the tour and said, “This isn’t up to my standards.” I forget what was actually said, but the point is, proper personal space and working environment are essential to a worker’s mood, morale, and productivity. Rightfully so in my opinion. Who can possibly be productive when they you have such intimate knowledge as to whether or not your co-workers deodorant is functioning properly? (continue reading…)

Stand-up desks seem to be falling under the old phrase of “everything old is new again.”

You can also say that about newly developed designs for office cubicles that were initially invented over 80 years ago. But stand-up desks go back even further when you consider that everyone from Thomas Jefferson to Ernest Hemingway reportedly used a stand-up desk for more inspired work time.

Hon Office Furniture is SCS Certified

The HON Company announced this month that more than 60 of its office furniture and educational furniture products in five categories have received level™ certification from Scientific Certification Systems (SCS). This significant milestone indicates that 80 percent of HON’s office furniture and school furniture product volume is now level certified.

level is the multi-attribute, sustainability standard and third-party certification program for the furniture industry. Created by BIFMA, it has been developed to deliver the most open and transparent means of evaluating and communicating the environmental and social impacts of furniture products in the built environment. The level certification mark identifies that a product has been evaluated by an independent third-party certifier. HON chose SCS, which HON has long recognized as a provider of quality certifications.

In the level certification process, a product, and the organization and facilities that produced it, are scored according to sustainability attributes across four areas: Materials, Energy and Atmosphere, Human and Ecosystem Health and Social Responsibility. The numeric marking 1, 2 or 3 (from 1 being the lowest level; to 3 being the highest) indicates what threshold of certification the product has achieved.

HON’s products received both level 1 and 2 certifications, with the majority being level 2 certified, and represent the following categories: office seating, laminate casegoods, office desks, lateral file cabinets, office files, workstations and classroom furniture.
